Each and every living thing is made up of DNA. Genomics is the science used to study this DNA to figure out how living things work. Once we figure this out, or sequence, the DNA of a living organism, we can do great things to benefit society like:
- Explore alternative energy sources and enhance energy production.
- Help farmers to grow more productive crops to help feed the world.
- Provide research tools to help prevent disease and save lives.
Genome Prairie also promotes agricultural biotechnology education, regulatory and consumer acceptance. Through public presentations and forums, guest speakers and films, Genome Prairie educates the students and the general public about genomics and related biosciences. Our goal is to open dialogue about the importance of such research advancements and to invite discussion about the impacts of genomics on society. Watch for upcoming educational public events in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Promotion and development of young scientists is also a key component of our educational program. Since 2008, Genome Prairie has been the regional coordinating agency for the Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge (formerly known as the Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge), a regional science competition that mirrors the "real life" of a researcher.
Genome Prairie is pleased to oversee SBC-Saskatoon region and to encourage young Canadians to pursue studies and careers in the exciting field of genomics/biotechnology.
