Genome Atlantic, Director, External Relations

Genomics provides in-depth knowledge of every living thing. These insights can lead to solutions for food production, sustainable energy and resource extraction, human disease, and healthy oceans and other natural habitat. Genome Atlantic is a not-for-profit corporation with a mission to help Atlantic Canada reap the economic and social benefits of genomics and associated technologies. Since our inception in 2000, we have worked with a range of partners to enable over $75 million in applied genomics R&D in the region. We are currently recruiting for the following position based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Director, External Relations will continue to build the reputation of the organization through the development and implementation of a comprehensive external relations plan, encompassing a wide variety of audiences and ranging from sector education to government and media relations.

Comfortable and experienced at both the strategic and tactical levels, you will establish and execute the overall external relations plan to proactively manage our relationships with key stakeholders in line with the organization’s key objectives. You will develop all communications materials, including brochures, annual reports, websites, newsletters, and presentations and you will work closely with project teams to ensure strategic project communications. While collaborating with other Management Team members in support of strategic/operational plans and associated fund raising proposals, you will also monitor, assess and advise on key political, business and academic activities that create potential opportunities or challenges.

You are an energetic and self-motivated team player, a proven relationship builder with excellent written and oral communication skills and comfortable presenting to and engaging with a wide range of business, education and government audiences. You have a working knowledge of provincial and federal government organizational structures and protocols.  You have a degree in communications and/or public relations and have benefited from 5-10 years of relevant experience developing and delivering government relations and corporate communications objectives, including creative tactics through working with agencies or freelance contractors. Familiarity with social media and key contacts at media outlets (print, radio and TV) would be considered assets.
